Aikido is a Japanese martial art with no tournaments of any kind. Aikido does not rely on defeating another person in order to get better, rather it stresses working together with your partner so that both can improve. This is one of the fundamental differences between Aikido and other martial arts.
The classes are open to students from 5 years old at the beginning of the term. If a student is not quite 5 and wishes to join, we are happy to have the student join one or two classes, during which time we assess the student and see how things go. We can only do so in a class with a space available.
We try to divide students by age as much as possible, with most after school classes having the younger kids in the early classes so they can finish earlier and get home, and older kids in the later classes.
For the first class, comfortable gym clothes are best. Track pants and a t-shirt works best, shorts and sleeveless tops are not so good for Aikido.
Priority at each school we teach goes to the students of the particular school. Some schools are for students of those schools only, however a few of the schools that we teach at do allow outside students only if there is space available in the class. Please contact Paul for more detailed information on that.
Absolutely. Make-up classes can be arranged by contacting Paul directly. As many of the classes are full please be sure to check first to make sure there is a space open in the class you want to come to on the day you want. Students dropping in to make-up a missed class without checking might end up not able to join if the class is full. Make-up classes are sometimes also possible at a different location than where you normally train.
Uniforms can be ordered directly from Pacific Aikido. Students can be sized on their first day, and once ordered the uniform can usually be delivered to class for the following week. Aside from Aikido uniforms Pacific Aikido can supply any type of martial arts gear.
We have classes for kids and adults at various locations in and around Tokyo. Kids classes are open to boys and girls from five years old.
Terms begin in September, January, and April, and coincide with International School calendars. New students are welcome to join at the beginning of each term. Special summer classes also take place from mid-June to the end of June, and early July to mid-July.
During classes students wear a keikogi or martial arts uniform. Students who need a uniform can order one directly from Pacific Aikido.
